![]() ![]() The two novels are examined and made to interact with each other in terms of dialogical and intertextual principles. Hence, the main focus is to draw the similarities and differences between the two texts and to explain how both novels tackle the issue of imperialism and racism. The point here is not just to show how the latter echoes Conrad’s novella, but the way that these pieces of arts intervene within each other, because even with the binary that exists between the two in terms of high and low culture, they still transmit the same message by narrating two stories that follow the same events. Thus, Edgar Rice Burroughs’s novel is seen as an explanation for the ambiguity that exists in Conrad’s novella. In terms of a range of critical theories, it sheds light on the similarities and differences that exist between the two pieces of writing. This dissertation discusses the intertextual relationship that exists between Heart of Darkness (1899) and Tarzan of the Apes (1912), through a comparative study. The study also argues that, as an attempt to bring morality, the " civilizing mission " brutalizes both colonizers and colonized alike due to its essential hypocrisy. Therefore, as will be seen, Conrad's literary work suggests that western ideals and values are deceptive. The novel will bring the alienation and dehumanization into the open. The purpose of the present paper is to bring an analytical approach to the gradual decay and decomposition of Western Society in Conrad's fiction. A thorough analytical examination of this work can provide valuable insight into its revolutionary contribution to literature. Joseph Conrad explored this decay and decomposition of values and ideals in his novella Heart of Darkness. It created a devastating effect on modern man causing a sense of dislocation, a loss of faith, a chaotic and meaningless life, and total disorder throughout Europe. Yet, this progression brought about the destruction of established norms and systems without offering a feasible alternative. The turn of the twentieth century was a time of tremendous progress in several different fields.
